The participation of women in India’s police forces has seen gradual growth, but their representation varies significantly across states and Union Territories. According to the Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D), some states have made notable progress, while others continue to have minimal female personnel. This analysis provides a state-wise breakdown of women in police forces over the last three years, highlighting both progress and areas that need improvement.
As per data from the Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D), Uttar Pradesh had the highest number of women in police forces in 2023, with 33,319 personnel. Maharashtra ranked second with 32,172 women, followed by Tamil Nadu in third place with 25,334 women in the police force.
Among Union Territories, Lakshadweep had the lowest count, with just 24 women personnel in the state police force. Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman and Diu reported 104 women, while Puducherry had 268 women police personnel.
