India has witnessed a significant surge in cyber crimes in recent years, as revealed by the latest data from the Ministry of Home Affairs. Government Initiatives to Combat Cyber Crime

The Ministry of Home Affairs has implemented several measures to strengthen the cyber security framework:

  • Establishment of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) as a centralized unit
  • Launch of the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) facilitating easy reporting of cyber incidents
  • Implementation of the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System which has saved over Rs. 4,386 crore across 13.36 lakh complaints
  • Introduction of toll-free helpline number 1930 for cyber complaint assistance Setting up the National Cyber Forensic Laboratory which has assisted in approximately 11,835 cyber crime cases
  • Creation of the Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre (CFMC) bringing together banks, financial intermediaries, telecom providers and law enforcement agencies
  • Proactive blocking of over 3,962 Skype IDs and 83,668 WhatsApp accounts used for digital arrest scams
  • Blocking of more than 7.81 lakh SIM cards and 2,08,469 IMEIs reported by police authorities
  • Formation of seven Joint Cyber Coordination Teams (JCCTs) covering cyber crime hotspots across the country
